Mentions and opportunities measure different things
Distinguish sampled product mentions from potential opportunities. Check explicit needs and original posts; sentiment and mention counts do not establish customers.
Short answer. A mention is a reference to a product. Intent needs context about someone asking, trying, comparing or deciding. DROP keeps relevant mentions separately from reviewed opportunities; neither raw mention volume nor sentiment is a customer count.
Name-drops are cheap
People repeat product names in lists, jokes, and news. Counting them inflates a radar and hides the few posts that would change your next conversation.
What intent looks like
How-to questions, complaints about a current tool, “what should I switch to,” and “we moved because…” are usable. A tagged screenshot with no problem usually is not.
How DROP uses that
Classification is intent-first. Filters change the chart and the list. Preview can show a theme; unlocking shows the supporting posts.
Separate tone from a need
Illustrative exercise — not a real customer result.
Worth checking: “I like Acme, but need a version with offline export” combines positive sentiment with a concrete constraint.
Do not count: “Acme is terrible” is negative sentiment without enough context to establish fit.
Next step: Classify tone separately, then ask what the author needs to accomplish.
Try it step by step
- Separate brand references from written requests before comparing counts.
- Read the author’s own words and distinguish advice, promotion and reporting from a current need.
- Keep useful mentions for context, while prioritising opportunities with a concrete problem your product addresses.
| Approach | Useful for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sentiment | Understand the tone of the post. | Does not show product fit or purchasing ability. |
| Need and fit | Connect the stated task to an available capability. | Does not guarantee a sale. |
Using DROP for this task

Are all mentions worthless?
No. They can show product feedback, awareness and discussion. They simply measure something different from a potential customer opportunity.
Does sentiment establish intent?
No. Positive, neutral and negative sentiment describe tone. A frustrated author may need a feature your product cannot supply.
