Social listening tools, compared honestly
DROP is a social listening and customer discovery tool for product makers and content creators. It starts from a website or public profile and finds relevant public conversations. Choose a listening tool by the decision you need to make: understand your market, measure a brand, or find a specific person you can help.

| Tool | Documented workflow | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| DROP | Website or public profile to sampled posts, matching reasons, Mentions and Opportunities. | Post-read allowances; no guaranteed leads or exhaustive archive. |
| Brand24 | Brand and market monitoring, with sentiment and intent features | Do not equate a mention allowance with DROP post reads |
| Mention / Agorapulse Listening | Brand monitoring, reporting and competitive intelligence | Mention stopped standalone sales on July 1, 2026; existing customers can retain their plans |
| Awario | Mention monitoring and social selling through Awario Leads | Awario also finds product requests; intent discovery is not unique to DROP |
| Google Alerts | Notifications about new matching Google Search results | A matching URL does not establish the author’s need or fit |
| Sprout Social | Social management with a dedicated Listening product | Listening extends beyond a brand inbox; do not reduce Sprout to scheduling |
| Brandwatch | Consumer research and social intelligence | DROP is not a replacement for an enterprise research dataset |
| Octolens | AI-filtered monitoring for brands and competitors | AI intent filtering is shared ground, not an exclusive DROP capability |
| Syften | Keyword monitoring for online communities | Community and web allowances are separate; X/Twitter and YouTube may require paid add-ons |
| F5Bot | Keyword alerts for Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters, with optional AI filtering | The free tier is marked personal use only; delivery, filtering and caps depend on the tier |
Official sources: Brand24 · Mention / Agorapulse Listening · Awario · Google Alerts · Sprout Social · Brandwatch · Octolens · Syften · F5Bot. This is a workflow comparison, not a complete feature inventory or an independent review. Confirm current sources, plans and restrictions with each provider. Read the individual comparisons and source-check dates.
Compare the work, not just the feature count
Brand24, Awario, Octolens and Syften have overlapping monitoring or filtering capabilities; Awario Leads explicitly finds product requests and competitor complaints. Mention’s official notice directs new buyers to Agorapulse Listening while existing customers can retain current Mention plans. DROP focuses on connecting an individual post to a product or creator. Compare the starting input, source coverage, explanation of a match, access to the original conversation, and charging unit. None of those differences proves that one tool will find better leads for every business.
Run a useful evaluation
Use one real product and the same date range. Inspect recommendation requests, a competitor complaint and an unrelated promotional post. Check whether each result explains the need and whether you can verify its source. Count distinct relevant people, not repeated posts. The public examples below show the format with clearly labeled fictional data; they are not a performance benchmark or customer testimonial.
Choose coverage and cost deliberately
Focus $19/mo per site or handle. Growth $99/mo per site or handle. Focus includes up to 500 post reads per paid period; Growth includes up to 3,000 and CSV export. These are reads, not promised leads. Paid monitoring supports X, Reddit, LinkedIn and Threads; the initial logged-in preview samples X and Reddit. Search timing depends on allowance and source availability. Another monitored site or handle needs another subscription.
Which social listening tool is best for a small team?
Start with your task. For PR coverage, publishing or broad market reporting, evaluate a suite built for those jobs. For finding relevant people from a site or profile, inspect DROP’s example output and then test your own sample. This is DROP’s own comparison, not an independent ranking.
Can I inspect DROP before logging in?
Yes. The product and creator example reports are public and explicitly fictional. Analysing your own site requires login. New accounts can open one recent, actionable opportunity before subscribing, when available; a preview is not a complete prospect list.
Does a higher result count mean better listening?
Not by itself. Repeated posts, vague keyword matches and unrelated promotions inflate counts. Compare evidence, freshness and people you could reasonably help. No plan guarantees a customer, subscriber or complete coverage.

Choose your next step
If your priority is enterprise consumer research, evaluate Brandwatch. For community keyword alerts, compare F5Bot. Creators need evidence of content interest rather than a software-buying score.
