DROP vs Google Drive: temporary delivery or shared storage?
DROP is built around a delivery that expires. Google Drive is a storage and collaboration product. Its account storage allowance is not equivalent to DROP’s single-transfer limit.
Send a file| Dimension | DROP | Google Drive (personal) |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Temporary delivery | Storage and collaboration |
| Sender account | Not required for the base flow | Google account |
| Size / allowance basis | 3 GB total per transfer; up to 1,000 files | 15 GB shared account storage; not a transfer cap |
| Link lifetime | 24h anonymous; optional verified Google extension to 72h from creation | Depends on sharing settings; not the DROP expiry model |
| Recipient access | Anyone with a valid link | Public links can open without login; restrictions and organization policy vary |
Google sign-in extension depends on configuration and verification before expiry. Vendor plans can change. Comparison is published by DROP; no independent speed ranking is implied.
Recipients and permissions
Do not assume a Google Drive recipient must sign in. Google documents public link access without a Google account when “Anyone with the link” is enabled. Restricted sharing and work or school policies can impose different requirements. DROP’s public download model is possession of a valid link.
Pick a delivery or a workspace
Use DROP to hand off a finished package with a short download window. Evaluate Drive when the file needs ongoing edits, comments, permissions and storage. Do not use an expiring transfer as your only backup.
