Facebook could be 'facing a big problem' if other countries follow Australia's lead
The Australian’s Adam Creighton says Facebook’s decision to remove rather than pay for Australian news content could prove a big problem for the tech giant if other countries follow Australia’s lead and propose similar media bargaining codes.
Facebook decided to ban Australian news content following escalating hostilities over the Australian government’s media bargaining code, which sought to force tech giants to pay Australian media outlets for using news content.
“It remains to be seen whether Facebook will eventually blink and strike some kind of agreement with the Australian government,” Mr Creighton said.
“Ultimately, Facebook needs Australia more than we need Facebook.
“Of course, Facebook is very worried about the setting of precedence.
“If it sets a precedent for other countries, it’s a big problem for Facebook.”
